Blue Ocean Leadership

Challenge:

Our company was hired for a Blue Ocean Leadership Training programme to help civil servants from an East Africa government improve efficiency and morale within their organizations.

According to Gallup, globally only 30% of employees actively apply their talent and energy to move their organizations forward. 50% are just putting their time in, while the remaining 20% act out their discontent in counterproductive ways. The study concludes that a main cause of employee disengagement is poor leadership.

Approach:

We employed blue ocean leadership, an approach developed by INSEAD Professor W. Chan Kim for releasing the sea of unexploited talent and energy in organizations.

An application of blue ocean strategy to leadership, blue ocean leadership involves a four-step process that allows leaders to gain a clear understanding of what changes it would take to bring out the best in their people, while conserving their most precious resource: time.

An analytic tool, the Leadership Canvas, shows leaders what activities they need to eliminate, reduce, raise, and create to convert disengaged employees into engaged ones.

Results:

As a result, the participants learned the blue ocean leadership process and tools and developed the relevant skills and mindset to start and run such a transformative programme within their organisations.

Moreover, the action learning format involved applying the new concepts to the participants’ actual challenges, preparing them to immediately launch their transformation programmes within their organisations: the Inspectorate of Government, the Law Reform Commission, a state-owned energy company and women entrepreneurship fund.

After 6 months, the participants reported implementing their blue ocean leadership transformation programmes within their organisations, with success in improving effectiveness of top and middle leadership, increasing morale and reducing absenteeism.
